PPG Industries, Inc. has called Pittsburgh home since the company was founded in 1883. This tour will visit two PPG manufacturing facilities. PPG Springdale produces industrial coatings, and recently become PPG's first pure-Kanban plant, running according to lean manufacturing concepts. Physical cards track the inventory and determine reorder points. This tour will be an introduction to an alternative view of plant scheduling and operations, as complex decision-making has been systematically simplified and reduced to its essential core elements.
PPG Creighton is PPG's original glass manufacturing plant, making automotive glass components today. One of the more complex manufacturing processes in PPG's range of products, producing quality glass in the shapes demanded by today's automobile designs requires an array of technology ranging from industrial furnaces through robots to detection of defects too small to be seen by the human eye. This tour will be an overview of the manufacturing process for laminated glass (primarily windshields and backlights).
NOTE: Handicap access will be limited in some manufacturing spaces due to tight clearances and safety requirements.
Requirements:
- Closed leather shoes with hard soles required (no open toe shoes, high heels, tennis shoes).
- Legs and arms must be covered; at Springdale, lab coats for protection will be provided.
- Electronic devices (including cell phones) are not permitted into production areas per safety regulations.
- Cameras (including cell phone and PDA cameras) are not permitted on site.
- Lighters, matches, food and drink are not permitted into production areas.

One of the most noted green buildings in Pittsburgh is the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, where the INFORMS Annual Meeting will be held! The convention center is the first certified green convention center in the United States. In conjunction with the main Green Building Alliance Tour described below, the Green Building Alliance will conduct three separate, one-hour walking tours of the convention center itself.

Fallingwater Tour

Drive through the magnificent mountain scenery of the Laurel Highlands to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, built as a summer home for the Edgar Kaufmann family, prominent Pittsburgh merchants. Dramatic cantilevered terraces soar over a cascading waterfall. The living room hearth embodies an immense boulder in the setting nature created. Completed in 1939 with guest wing and servants quarters, it is as fresh today as when it was built. This breathtaking house was judged by the American Institute of Architects in 1986 to be the nation's most successful example of architectural design. It is described as the clearest expression of Wright's ideal...that man can live in harmony with nature.
Lunch will be held at The Stone House Restaurant & Inn, one of the original wayside inns along the National Road. The inn opened its doors in 1822 to wagoners and travelers seeking renewed health in the water of nearby Fayette Springs. The house is regarded by travelers and locals alike as a charming getaway for fine dining and good times in a peaceful mountain setting. Lunch will be a choice of steak or chicken caesar salad. After lunch, the tour continues to the Christian W. Klay Winery, where you will have a tour of the facility and time to taste and buy some local wines.
