Risk Analysis and Robust Optimal Solutions: High Productivity Modeling in Excel
Daniel H. Fylstra, President
More than ever today, models for risk analysis and optimal resource allocation in the presence of uncertainty can be built more easily, scaled up to large size and solved more effectively in Microsoft Excel. Robust optimization and stochastic programming models, traditionally so hard to build that many modelers don’t even try, are extremely easy to create and solve in Excel. Access to disparate data sources, often a headache with other tools, is surprisingly simple in Excel. Imagined “limits” have disappeared, and large-scale models are commonplace in industry. This session will demonstrate the tools and open your eyes to new possibilities.

Optimization in SAS with OPTMODEL
Ed Hughes, Product Manager
Trevor Kearney, Manager, Numerical Optimization R&D
SAS/OR’s 9.2 release (March 2008) continues enhancements to our new lineup of optimization modules. Foremost among these is OPTMODEL, featuring a powerful and intuitive algebraic language designed specifically for optimization modeling. We’ll demonstrate how OPTMODEL delivers value in its own right, not only by accessing all of the new SAS/OR optimization solvers (linear, mixed-integer, quadratic and general nonlinear), but also by supporting customized solution methods. We’ll also illustrate the benefits of OPTMODEL’s integration into the SAS language, and we’ll explore how the SAS business intelligence framework and JMP (a SAS product) can be used to create business user interfaces for optimization model deployment.
