He has spent most of his career focused on the problem of making machines smarter. His research is aimed at bridging the human\/machine communication gap between the data we gather and the information that is locked within it.<\/p>\n<p>Since the fall of 2016, he has been the faculty lead of Northwestern\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccormick.northwestern.edu\/computer-science\/cs-plus-x\/\">CS + X<\/a> initiative, exploring how computational thinking can be used to transform fields such as the law, medicine, and education. He also directs <strong>Northwestern\u2019s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccormick.northwestern.edu\/artificial-intelligence\/\">MSAI<\/a>) as well as the <strong>Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/casmi.northwestern.edu\/\">CASMI<\/a>). In January of 2023, he was named a Fellow of the <strong>Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/aaai.org\/\">AAAI<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>He believes in humanizing computers with the aim of stopping the process of mechanizing people. We will demonstrate how systems that initially conserve anonymity may be architected to provide pathways of trust-building activities and can ultimately lead to full participation. Soulakis, PhD, is currently an associate professor and Chair of the Department of Health Informatics and Data Science at Loyola University Chicago Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health. Soulakis is also the director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Informatics Research (CHOIR), a University-wide center intended to catalyze faculty research collaborations, applied informatics and data science training, and equitable community partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>Soulakis is a public health scientist whose research focus lies at the intersection of epidemiology and informatics with an emphasis on understanding the expanding, data-rich world we live in and leveraging computationally intensive analytical techniques to monitor the health of communities. His current work is an expansion into the newly emerging field of community-first informatics; seeking to better understand the ascertainment of prevention networks and developing a more comprehensive scientific approach to understanding the dynamics of community engagement and health promotion. He also maintains an active research program in public health informatics, especially tracking emerging trends in community health using temporal and spatial surveillance methods, identifying new and novel methods of data collection and processing of electronic health record data, and examining electronic exchange of health information between healthcare providers and public health agencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soulakis has served as a scientific reviewer for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health since 2013. His work has been published in the <em>Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Journal of Biomedical Informatics<\/em>, <em>and Implementation Science<\/em>, and <em>Emerging Infectious Diseases<\/em>. We will demonstrate how systems that initially conserve anonymity may be architected to provide pathways of trust-building activities and can ultimately lead to full participation. Special cases of peer referral will demonstrate how we might discover clusters of engagement among communities which may otherwise wish to remain in the margins.<\/p>\n<ul><li><h4>+ Nicholas Soulakis Bio<\/h4><p>Nicholas D. Soulakis, PhD, is currently an associate professor and Chair of the Department of Health Informatics and Data Science at Loyola University Chicago Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health. Soulakis is also the director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Informatics Research (CHOIR), a University-wide center intended to catalyze faculty research collaborations, applied informatics and data science training, and equitable community partnerships.<\/p> <p>Soulakis is a public health scientist whose research focus lies at the intersection of epidemiology and informatics with an emphasis on understanding the expanding, data-rich world we live in and leveraging computationally intensive analytical techniques to monitor the health of communities. His current work is an expansion into the newly emerging field of community-first informatics; seeking to better understand the ascertainment of prevention networks and developing a more comprehensive scientific approach to understanding the dynamics of community engagement and health promotion. He also maintains an active research program in public health informatics, especially tracking emerging trends in community health using temporal and spatial surveillance methods, identifying new and novel methods of data collection and processing of electronic health record data, and examining electronic exchange of health information between healthcare providers and public health agencies.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Soulakis has served as a scientific reviewer for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health since 2013. His work has been published in the <em>Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Journal of Biomedical Informatics<\/em>, <em>and Implementation Science<\/em>, and <em>Emerging Infectious Diseases<\/em>. She built the first proprietary algorithm in out-of-pocket medication cost at the point of care, and she was voted the top telemedicine solution provider for three years straight, and interviewed by Melinda Gates.
