There is a tendency to focus on all the technical developments when discussing simulation and considering what will happen in the future. And this is of course relevant and important. But even more so is how we think related to simulation, how we use related competence (or don’t), what demands we put on the software platforms (and don’t), how we work in the projects (and don’t), and what issues we address (and don’t) – the “philosophy of simulation”! In the workshop, experiences from “the past” are included. A lot has improved and evolved, but not by necessity everything. And in heading for the future we should learn from this!

The format of the workshop will not be rigidly fixed, but will rather consist of a number of “components”, that we together make something out of! So the output is an effect of the dynamics in the 2-hour workshop system and the input from the participants – a little bit like with simulation! There will be a few presentations to start with, to set the platform – and hopefully inspire. Discussions and questions – also during presentations – are encouraged. There will be interactivity, through questions or “exercises”. There will be a panel, to trigger debate and discussions.

The message is, to summarize, that the potential of simulation is hugely underutilized! And the major obstacle is the profession itself! Do you agree? Or not? Please help us make this a worthwhile workshop!

The AnyLogic Company
Sunday, December 9
3-5pm

Material Handling Simulation with AnyLogic and AnyLogic Cloud
By: Dr. Andrei Borshchev, CEO

We will focus on AnyLogic’s new features: The Material Handling Library, browser-based animation, and AnyLogic Cloud. After steel coils are produced and cooled, they are transported to a warehouse to await transport to the end customer. In the warehouse, they are usually placed on cradles by automatic cranes, but can alternatively also be stored on top of one another (stacking). As coils come in many different sizes, cradle positioning determines where which coils can be placed. An optimal layout for a coil warehouse means that each coil can be placed at a correct cradle. Finding the best layout can increase the warehouse capacity by almost 10%, hence the importance of simulating different cradle setups in a large number of scenario’s. Using both our modelling & scenario management software, we were able to optimize the design of the new warehouse, resulting in a capacity increase of around 300 coils!

Case study 2: Live supply chain model for marine module shipments

Systems Navigator has deployed an operational supply chain model for a major international oil company (IOC). The supply chain consists of the marine transport of heavy modules towards an oil field in Kazakhstan. The model contains all the marine assets (ship, tug & barge), as well as the storage facilities and port resources. Live data (a.o. module location, resource status & location) is fed daily into the model, after which the marine schedule can be checked for any inconsistencies. The model is used to create and test alternative shipment schedules, as well potential future scenario’s in terms of bad weather, resource unavailability etc. The live model is a direct “cousin” of the supply chain model that was initially used to design the supply chain. Combining the model, both during design as well as in operation, has resulted in maximized benefits for the client in terms of capital saved, risk management, contractor evaluations, as well as scenario planning.

Xcelgo
Sunday, December 9
3-5pm

Benefit from simulations throughout an automation system’s lifecycle with Experior

With Industry 4.0 trends such as Smart Manufacturing, IoT and Digital Twins unfolding, the use of simulations throughout the lifecycle of automation systems is becoming increasingly relevant.

Xcelgo’s workshop will provide the audience with examples of beneficial simulation applications throughout an automation system’s lifecycle and demonstrate several of these applications – on the basis of their own developed software platform for 3D modelling, simulation and emulation, Experior.

The workshop also initiates a discussion of the benefits and disadvantages of a simulation platform solution versus a simulation software package solution.
