Annoucement of Winners for the 3rd Annual Simulation Challenge at WSC<\/h2>\n

The 3rd Annual Simulation Challenge, jointly organized by the National University of Singapore, the University of Exeter, and Shanghai Maritime University, and generously sponsored by Sealor Tech and Moffatt & Nichol, has successfully concluded. Aligned with the 2024 Winter Simulation Conference’s theme, “Simulation for the Imagination Age,” the Challenge called upon participants to unleash the potential of simulation technologies in revolutionizing maritime systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year’s challenge saw participation from 20 teams comprising 50 contenders from around the globe, including academic institutions, research organizations, and corporations. After four months of rigorous competition, five teams emerged prominently, excelling in their respective categories as detailed in the appended graphic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The triumphant execution of this year\u2019s Simulation Challenge has provided an invaluable platform for both students and professionals to demonstrate their innovative thinking and technical prowess. We continue to affirm the Simulation Challenge\u2019s pivotal role in narrowing the divide between academia and industry, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and catalyzing innovation to tackle real-world challenges through cutting-edge simulation technologies.<\/span><\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The Simulation Challenge at the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC), evolving from its initial launch in 2022 as the “Case Study Competition”, continues to underscore the critical role of simulation in bridging the gap between academia and industry. This initiative thrives on promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, sparking innovation, and addressing real-world challenges with advanced simulation solutions.<\/p>\n

This year, aligning with the WSC 2024 theme \u201cSimulation for the Imagination Age\u201d the Challenge invites creators to unleash the potential of simulation technology in transforming maritime systems. As we navigate a world increasingly reliant on complex maritime logistics for global trade, we are shifting our focus toward empowering participants to reimagine the future of port operations and cargo logistics. The Challenge encourages participants to harness their creativity to design, optimize, and evaluate dynamic systems using simulation, crafting solutions that meet the ever-evolving demands of the maritime industry with ingenuity and foresight.<\/p>\n

In light of the critical need for technological advancements in maritime logistics, we are delighted to announce Sealor Tech as the co-organizer and sponsor of this year’s challenge. Sealor Tech specializes in cutting-edge digital twin technologies for the maritime industry, aiming to revolutionize port operations and cargo logistics through innovative solutions. Problem Description<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This year’s Simulation Challenge pivots towards maritime logistics, focusing on a cargo port operation issue involving complex interactions and operations within a cargo port, from ship berthing to container handling and automated guided vehicle (AGV) management. Participants are invited to optimize cargo port operations for improving efficiency and fostering creative solutions. The organizers will provide a basic simulation model using discrete-event modeling methods and which is implemented in an open-source DES framework (i.e., O2DES.NET). In order to ensure clarity and accessibility for all participants, a comprehensive document to describe the model structure according to the rigorously defined modeling formalism will also be provided to ensure clarity and accessibility for all participants.<\/p>\n
