Accelerating Analytics with a Self-Serve Data Platform

Morningstar, a leading investment research firm with a 40-year history, transformed its data
infrastructure to address challenges caused by fragmented and outdated systems. In 2019, the
company launched a data lake on AWS, leveraging tools such as S3 and Athena to improve the
discovery and accessibility of data at Morningstar. Later, this evolved into a data lakehouse
architecture using Redshift. These advancements enabled the rapid integration of acquired
datasets, such as Sustainalytics.
The introduction of self-service capabilities empowered data domain owners to manage data
ingestion, quality monitoring, and modeling independently. This autonomy allowed the data teams
to adopt a decentralized data architecture paradigm (data mesh). The new paradigm shifts further
enhanced data quality and data access, improving data literacy within the organization
This talk will also highlight how a data domain team leverages the self-service data platform to
accelerate insight generation, significantly reducing the time to market for data products.
