Beyond Optimization: Lessons from Aviation Analytics and Operations Research

How do you transition from an optimization-focused practitioner into an impactful leader? In the past 25 years of applying advanced analytics and operations research in aviation, I have learned that success extends beyond optimization—it requires starting with the customer and empowering teams to solve the right problems. In this session, you will explore how technical careers can evolve to encompass leadership, mentorship, and professional purpose. Drawing on lessons from diverse company cultures and scales—ranging from Carmen Systems’ entrepreneurial startup spirit to Boeing’s leadership in aerospace, and most recently to Amazon’s customer-obsessed culture—we will examine how people skills are central to creating analytics impact. You will gain insights into applying core leadership principles, including curiosity, ownership and sound judgment, and finding deeper meaning in technical work. Designed for early- and mid-career professionals, this talk shows how technical careers can evolve beyond optimization and that lasting impact comes from solving the right problems for the right reasons, through people.
