CANA's very own Principal Operations Research Analyst, Connor McLemore, shares his presentation today at the #INFORMS2021 conference, on Military Readiness Modeling: An Actionable Data Framework. Joined by Shaun W. Doheney & Dr. Sam L. Savage, read a preview of the presentation here:

Although the purpose of the Department of Defense (DoD) is accepted broadly to be “to provide ready and sustainable military forces to protect the nation’s vital interests,” the meaning of that statement is largely reliant upon the definition of the word “ready.” Yet it is generally unclear what it means to be ready. Ready for what? How ready? By when? To address this problem, we recommend the DoD adopt a simple, interpretable, and actionable data framework using stochastic scenario libraries that permit calculation of the probabilities of military readiness for specified missions at uncertain future times across unit types and military branches. It is based on the concept of auditable, stochastic scenario libraries long in use in financial engineering and the insurance industry. If implemented by the military, such a framework could allow mathematically coherent readiness estimates to better communicate “how ready for what” combinations of military assets are. Additional details can be found in our paper published in MOR Journal 2021 Vol. 26, #1, “Military Readiness Modeling: Changing the Question from ‘Ready or Not?’ to ‘How Ready for What?’”

Featured speaker in the INFORMS Military and Security Society cluster at #INFORMS2021 is Dr. Natalie Scala. Dr. Scala is an Associate Professor and the Graduate Program Director at Towson University. Her presentation titled, "Mitigating Behavior of Poll Workers as an Insider Threat to Elections Security" is scheduled to take place virtually on October 24th from 9:00 - 10:30 am Eastern Time.⠀

Dr. Natalie Scala will be presenting research on poll workers as trusted insiders. How do we train and educate poll workers so they can identify and mitigate potential threats at polling places? What skills do they need? We use information theory and AI to develop a model to analyze data from over 2,000 US poll workers. This research was led by recent SCM alumni Yeabsira Mezgebe and is co-advised by Dr. Josh Dehlinger in CIS⠀

The INFORMS Annual Meeting takes place in-person and virtually 24 - 27 October. Register here:⠀

No próximo semestre voltarei a dar aulas presenciais. Aos poucos a gente chega lá.

Será que apresentarei ao vivo em algum momento no Brasil?
